Wise Words.
Recently adding a feature film alongside Sandra Bullock onto his impressive body of work, father, friend and a fabulous actor, Dominic Flores shares some wisdom with us. Full Name: Dominic Flores What did you study in school? In school I studied the art of partying and ditching school unfortunately. What is your current profession? I'm a TV and Film actor. What would you consider your greatest success to this day? Professionally, my biggest success was a lead role starring opposite Sandra Bullock in the Warner Brothers film Our Brand is Crisis in 2015. Personally, my biggest success is my wife and four kids Could you tell us a little bit about your journey to success? Trust me, given my delinquent background, the fact that I found profound love and family is a huge success that I'm grateful to God for every day. My journey was tricky and I am no stranger to the fight. I was given success the first year I moved to Hollywood in my mid-twenties and then squandered it very quickly, burning every bridge along with it. I realized that my biggest obstacle was myself, and my lack of self worth. It took a good amount of therapy years and trips to South America, working with a Shaman and a medicine called Ayahuasca, to find my value and finally harness success again in my career. If you're not ready on a deep level, if you don't operate from the knowing of your expanded self, then it's easy to spin your wheels in self-doubt. What was one of the biggest obstacles you faced in your professional life, and how did you overcome it? Acting can be a brutal teacher. Auditions can be very confronting emotionally and psychologically, especially when 200 other actors are trying for your same part. If you're used to finding approval outside of yourself then acting is not the profession for you. It's very competitive and not always the best actor gets the job. It's a business and who is cast is a complicated process that most times is out of your control. If you knew then, what you do now, would you do anything differently? I was naive in my early years and I think that's necessary in the beginning. There has to be a delusion of grandeur to believe that you will star in a big movie or have a TV series of your own. The odds are so against you that you almost need the delusion to drive the dream. If I knew how difficult the actor's road could be I woulda quit years ago. Thank God for my delusion of grandeur that kept the flame lit. Maybe this is the way it is for any profession but I do think acting is unique. What would you consider to be one of the greatest lessons you’ve learned throughout the years? I've explored other careers albeit minimally but only acting seems to encompass all the facets of life in one job. I've heard that actors and jet fighter pilots have the highest testosterone levels of any humans on the planet and I don't know if that's a bad or a good thing. There's a lot of rejection on a daily basis in the entertainment industry so you gotta be resilient and believe in yourself when no one else does. What advice would you give to new graduates trying to find their way in the world? If you're at the first crossroads of a career in life, I suggest traveling and radical self-reflection for a year before committing to any job path permanently. It's too easy to settle for a dollar amount or a comfort level. That's fine for some, but I believe that knowledge of self comes first for any kind of lasting happiness or value; activating the spirit inside and inviting that energy to lead your path daily. I'm grateful for the hard life experiences. They are my arsenals to use in my work. Like I said before, I'm no stranger to the fight and life has clobbered me on more than one occasion What is your favorite quote? My favorite quote comes from Sandra Bullock's character in Our Brand is Crisis: "If you don't like the road you're on, pave a new one" This is your life and it's amazing. Live and experience all of it - light and dark. You are valuable and spend the time to nurture your own divinity. It's real...at least for me.
